What is the theme for your Marvel: Crisis Protocol force?

My theme is a pretty fluffy X-Force list led by Cable.

Which has been your favorite miniature to paint as you gear up for the AdeptiCon Showdown?

It’s gotta be converting and painting up Honey Badger. I love bringing characters to life infused with their unique personalities. Honey Badger’s sweater costume with goggles is so iconic I wanted to capture her spunk and attitude and I think I was able to do her justice!

What do you enjoy about painting Marvel: Crisis Protocol?

I love the wide range of interpretation painters can have painting Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniatures. You can do a quick job if you want because the miniatures are relatively uncluttered with unnecessary details but are still dynamic and interesting. You can also go to town to freehand reflections and emphasize muscles/anatomy to make your miniature more complex as well.

What are you looking forward to at AdeptiCon 2025?

The AdeptiCon Marvel: Crisis Protocol Showdown of course! I can’t wait to throw down with Dallas, Aaron, and Matt with beautifully painted miniatures. The secret narrative seems super fun too—can’t wait!

For new painters, what advice would you give them?

I would highly suggest getting a subscription to Marvel Unlimited and find reference pictures to study in preparation for painting. You can learn a lot about how to paint anatomical volumes, light/shadows/reflections, and color selection. It has been an invaluable tool for me.

Aaron Lovejoy – @artoflovejoy

What is the theme for your Marvel: Crisis Protocol force?

My force is the Avengers. While I’d like to say I chose my force for its competitive edge, I actually just chose the miniatures I liked best. I absolutely love the Hulk and Hulkbuster miniatures, so those were automatic picks. Sam Wilson is one of my favorite miniatures in the range, another easy choice. The original Black Panther miniatures are just fantastic—a definite yes for me! I did the box art for Pyro and loved the miniature, so this gives me a chance to try an alternate paint scheme. Thor is another miniature with a great, stoic pose. Wolverine is a miniature I’ve always wanted to paint, and he;s a beast in the game. Lastly, I chose Luke Cage; I needed a tough guy, and he fits the bill perfectly. I can’t wait to paint him.

The paint scheme for these is based on speed. The challenge is to paint them as well as I can in a short amount of time. I find that exercises like these really help advance my painting, both in speed and quality. I learn to make quick decisions and avoid costly, time-wasting mistakes.

Which has been your favorite miniature to paint as you gear up for the AdeptiCon Showdown?

Each one is fun in its own right, but I have to say Sam Wilson’s Captain America is my favorite so far.

What do you enjoy about painting Marvel: Crisis Protocol?

I think the sculpts are really good. They are fairly simple miniatures, so you can save a lot of time painting them, which gives you more time for the details. The bonus is that the game is a blast too! I really enjoy both painting and playing Marvel: Crisis Protocol!

What are you looking forward to at AdeptiCon 2025?

I’m looking forward to seeing the new venue. They say there are more restaurants there, so that is exciting. As always, it’s great to see friends and make new ones—AdeptiCon is really good for that. I also really enjoy teaching classes at AdeptiCon.

The best part about this year’s AdeptiCon, and the thing I am most looking forward to, is our inevitable crushing of Dallas in the AdeptiCon Showdown! Mostly, I just want to drool over Dallas’s, Anthony’s, and Matt’s forces!

For new painters, what advice would you give them?

Invest in your painting—in other words, paint a lot, especially if you want to get better. Second, invest in your learning, whether that be watching YouTube videos, Twitch streams, taking classes at conventions, or signing up for your favorite painter’s Patreon, where you can talk directly with talented artists and learn things quickly that would normally take years of trial and error. Third, find some friends and start a paint night, either at your house or a local game store. There is just something about painting with your friends that makes it more fun. You may even find that you learn faster as well!

Matt DiPietro – @mattdipietroart

What is the theme for your Marvel: Crisis Protocol force?

The theme of my Marvel: Crisis Protocol list is inspired by the classic X-Men cartoons from the 90s. I used to watch these cartoons every week and it was how I was introduced to the Marvel Universe and comic books in general. The goal for the project was to just have fun starting my collection, so I wasn’t concerned with making a competitive list. Each miniature was painted from start to finish in just 2.5 hours using a quick comic style that I developed just for this project. I really like the bold results of this approach and I’m excited to play more games with my X-Men!

Which has been your favorite miniature to paint as you gear up for the AdeptiCon Showdown?

My favorite miniature to paint so far has been Iceman. I was inspired by a Marvel cover art that used two light sources: one normal light and one warm sunset light. The effect works great on the miniature and could be cast by some of the other members of my team like Gambit or Cyclops. I really enjoy painting Marvel: Crisis Protocol miniatures because the poses are really amazing and interact so well with the dramatic lighting I’ve applied to the miniatures. The sculpts almost defy gravity and are enjoyable from all angles. Painting these is a great way to relax and take a break from my fine art miniature work and I’ve enjoyed it immensely.

I’m looking forward to meeting up with all my friends at AdeptiCon. Playing in the showdown with Dallas. Aaron, and Anthony is for sure to be a highlight for me. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people through the classes I will be teaching and forming new bonds over our shared love for the art of miniature painting.

What are you looking forward to at AdeptiCon 2025?

For new painters I always recommend giving yourself time to enjoy the pure act of painting. There are so many great sources of information these days and I’ve noticed that the temptation for new painters can be to learn everything all at once. However, my advice is to relax and not stress yourself with becoming a great painter overnight. Let yourself fall in love with the act of painting; if you can do that then you will form a long-term connection with your art, which is critical when you are first starting. Techniques and skills will be learned as you paint, but it’s this love for the art that will carry you through and keep you learning and painting.
