Scene to Stats: Stormtroopers

“Aren’t you a little short for a Stormtrooper?” -Princess Leia to Luke Skywalker

The Imperial machine is made up of many parts. From the everyday administrative officer to a Grand Moff, each has a role to play in the makeup of the Galactic Empire. Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of the Empire is the Imperial stormtrooper. Recruited at a young age, these specialty troopers are known for their ruthless assaults and shock tactics. They’re often seen on the front lines of difficult theaters, deployed swiftly to quell civil unrest and insurrection. Join us now as we take a closer look at the backbone of the Empire, stormtroopers.

A familiar sight to seasoned Star WarsTM: Legion commanders, Imperial stormtroopers are ready to fight for the glory of the Empire. They hold the rank of Corps and come in at 42 points per unit. They have the Trooper subtype and have 1 health per miniature. Armored in their iconic white body armor with black-striped helmets, they have a red defense die, offering better protection compared to the average
soldier. Additionally, their academy training is represented by Surge to Hit on offense and Precise 1, which allows them to re-roll one additional die when they spend an Aim token. This benefits their melee strikes as well as blaster fire from their E-11 rifles. The unit’s Courage is only 1, but this is a challenge the many Imperial Commanders will have no qualms with. Director Krennic, for example, can keep a squad
moving forward through a judicious use of the Compel keyword, while Darth Vader ensures no trooper dares run while he’s commanding an Imperial force.

As the elite soldiers of the Empire, stormtroopers have a wide variety of options to upgrade the unit for any situation. Their unit card has a total of 4 upgrade slots: Heavy Weapon, Personnel, Gear, and Grenades can all be equipped to bolster the unit’s potential. Two powerful ranged weapons are available. The first of these is the T-21 Repeating Blaster. Adding 4 white attack dice and Critical 2 at range 3, this solid addition to a Stormtrooper squad ensures any target will be blasted into dust. In contrast, the HH-12 provides an Anti-Armor option, giving the Stormtrooper squad a range 2–4 attack that adds 3 black attack dice and Impact 3 to the pool. An Imperial Commander deploying Stormtroopers would therefore be wise to support these capable weapons with a supply of aim tokens, tapping into both the weight of fire the unit provides and their inherent Precise 1.

Stormtrooper squads can also increase their numbers through one of the following personnel upgrades. The first of these is a Stormtrooper upgrade, adding a single miniature to the unit. Are even more numbers needed to feed the Imperial War Machine? Then a Stormtrooper squad upgrade may be required, adding 5 miniatures instead! Not only does this massively increase the size of this unit, but it also adds Indomitable and increases the unit’s coherency range.

Finally, two more upgrades round out the Stormtrooper Unit Expansion. For four points, Precision Scopes add Precise 1 to the squad. As the Stormtrooper squads already have this keyword, this will allow them to reroll two additional dice in their attacks instead of one. Impact Grenades give Stormtroopers the ability to react to Armored units at close range, adding Impact 4 and a single black attack die to an attack
pool including these deadly weapons. These upgrade slots could also be utilized for other advantages, such as Recon Intel to maneuver your unit to support an advance, or Smoke Grenades to cover friendly units as they find their own protection. All these options and more ensure units of stormtroopers will ensure an Imperial victory in your games of Star Wars: Legion.
