If you thought your last family reunion was weird, wait until you check out the subject of today’s From Panel to Play. From the battlefields of the far future to upstate New York, it’s Nathan Summers, a.k.a. Cable!
Nathan Summers was born to be a weapon. The child of Scott and Madelyne Pryor-Summers, Nathan was a mutant born with significant telepathic and telekinetic abilities. The skilled geneticist and Horseman of the Apocalypse Mr. Sinister intended to use the young Summers as a weapon against his master, but Apocalypse kidnapped and infected the child with the techno-organic virus intending to kill him. To save his son, Scott Summers sent Nathan into the future, hoping for a cure.
In the future, Nathan grew to be a veteran of constant conflict. Taking the name Cable, he endured bitter wars and became a hardened soldier, eventually traveling through time to prevent the future he suffered from coming to pass.
Cable’s miniature is a dramatic and eye-catching presence on the tabletop, looking like a world-weary veteran of a post-apocalyptic world overrun with violence. From the metallic arm caused by the techno-organic virus, to his futuristic plasma rifle, down to the pouches covering his body, every detail on Cable is rendered in crisp detail. Perhaps most striking is the telekinetic shield Cable has thrown in front of himself, which sparks with the impact of multiple projectile strikes.
Cable is a versatile powerhouse that brings an array of different tools to every crisis. With his above-average Stamina, solid defenses, and a suite of attacks and superpowers, he has numerous techniques to support his allies and devastate his enemies.
As you might expect from this time-traveling veteran of future war, Cable hits the scene of a crisis with a massive plasma rifle in hand. Weapons development really has advanced in the future: the beam of this rifle cuts across the battlefield at an incredible range and hits hard with a concentrated blast of energy.
But weapons aren’t what make the man. Cable’s other attack, Askani’son, shows you what this mutant can do. As the techno-organic virus in his body subsides, Cable is better able to draw on his mutant powers. Askani’son draws on his immense telepathic ability to throw down an Area 2 mystic attack that is Strength 7. For each attack that deals damage, Cable can remove 1 damage from himself.
Cable is no slouch in the powers department, either. He has an impressive six superpowers, each of which draws on an aspect of his mutant powers and long career as a warrior.
We don’t have time to cover all six in this installment, but here are some highlights. Wetworks is Cable’s leadership for the new X-Force affiliation and represents his cool under fire and ability to command a small unit to complete hostile objectives. Wetworks allows each member of the affiliation to reroll 1 die in an attack roll each turn.
Omega Level Threat is another demonstration of Cable’s incredible mutant abilities. He telekinetically picks up a car or small building and hurls it at a target. Costing between 1 and 4 Power, Omega Level Threat allows Cable to throw terrain with a size equal to the amount of power spent.
Last is Telekinetic Shield, a reactive superpower that is depicted on Cable’s miniature. Using his telekinesis, Cable can divert or deflect incoming attacks to avoid harm. When used, this power allows Cable to add 2 dice to his defense roll, or he can help out a teammate by adding the bonus dice to their defense!
Cable has other superpowers that make him a menacing figure on the battlefield, but we’re out of time for today.
