“Aw, you made a friend.” – Boil, to Waxer; Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Commander of the famed 212th Attack Battalion alongside the illustrious Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi, CC-2224, or “Cody,” boldly returns to the battlefields of Star WarsTM: Legion. While the many seasoned generals may already be familiar with Clone Commander Cody and his stalwart battalion—including the ever-dependable Waxer and Boil—there is a wealth to learn of these units for players new to Star Wars: Legion. Read on in this installment of Scene to Stats for more on how to use Clone Commander Cody, Waxer, and Boil in your very own Grand Army of the Republic.
Clone Commander Cody carries the Commander unit rank. The Commander rank is one of the few unit ranks that must be included in a player’s army, and these rare units serve a vital role on the battlefield. Commander units can improve the courage value of nearby Trooper units and are the primary source of Orders each Command Phase, playing and resolving their Command Cards to ensure a player’s army has faceup Order tokens where it needs them most. Clone Commander Cody takes this role a step further, carrying the Direct: Vehicle unit keyword so that he may issue a bonus Order to a Ground Vehicle or Repulsor Vehicle unit each round, ensuring your lynchpin units activate at the perfect moment. This command and support role is further accentuated on the tabletop by his Observe 2 and Take Cover 1 keywords, which enable him to improve the offense or defense of his Galactic Republic army as the situation demands by placing out valuable Observation tokens and Dodge tokens.
Clone Commander Cody’s abilities extend far beyond his tactical prowess, and he carries a number of other keywords to reflect his impressive marksmanship. His DC-15A Blaster Rifle carries an imposing, table-spanning range of 4. His Target 1 unit keyword grants him a free Aim token when he is issued an Order, which he may use to power his own Lethal 1 weapon keyword or share to friendly Clone Trooper units nearby. Cody’s clone armor comes complete with a jetpack, granting him the Jump 1 keyword and allowing him to deftly navigate your battlefields and find the perfect vantage point for a well-placed ranged attack.
Building a command hand is one of the first strategic decisions a player must make in a game of Star Wars: Legion, occurring even before players build the mission. Command hand space is limited to six Command Cards total—not including the 4-pip, Standing Orders—and many players’ armies feature a number of units that each bring their own powerful Command Cards. Clone Commander Cody’s suite of Command Cards are here to make those pre-game decisions even more challenging and rewarding.
The Bring it Down! Command Card allows Cody to perform his Observe 2 free card action a second time, placing out numerous Observation tokens that can be spent by friendly units for either Suppressive or Impact 1 based on the unit type they are attacking. With Have I Ever Let You Down?, Cody can return fire on enemy units that attack his nearby allies, synergising perfectly with friendly units with the Guardian X keyword, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Combined Arms Command Card Orders a mighty 4 units total (not to mention the Direct: Vehicle keyword!), and friendly Clone Trooper units might take advantage of the free moves granted by nearby friendly vehicle units to either retreat to cover or advance onto an Objective token in a critical turning point of the game! Altogether, these Command Cards present a host of army-building considerations for Galactic Republic players and reward different unit combinations.
The 212th Attack Battalion’s tales of heroism are beyond summary, their deployments spanning the Clone Wars from its infancy on Christophsis to its twilight on Utapau. Among these mighty few are the warriors of Ghost Company, Waxer and Boil. These Upgrade Cards have been redesigned since their original inception into Squad Leader upgrades, a type of Upgrade Card unique to Galactic Republic faction which allows them unparalleled flexibility in their Clone Trooper units and the capability to maximize the number of unique personalities in their army. Both carry the Leader keyword to serve as the unit leader of units to which they are equipped, and the valuable Scout 1 keyword enables each to rapidly deploy to your battlefields and secure the mission objective. Waxer carries the Disciplined 1 keyword, granting his unit some Suppression management and further accentuating Clone Trooper units’ naturally high courage values. Boil brings the Guardian 1 unit keyword to his unit, allowing a canny Galactic Republic player to shift damage away from a valuable defending unit, such as a Commander or Special Forces unit, onto Boil’s Corps unit.
This Character Expansion also supplies players with general-use Upgrade Cards for their Galactic Republic armies and beyond. A feature of Star Wars: Legion, many Upgrade Cards can be equipped to any unit with the appropriate icon on its upgrade bar, empowering players to mix and match Unit Cards and Upgrade Cards to fit their own playstyle. The On the Hunt Upgrade Card can be equipped to any unit with the Training icon, from Clone Commander Cody to the specialized ARC Troopers, granting them additional Aim tokens when attacking enemy Trooper units that were wounded prior. The Portable Scanner is a Gear upgrade that is a natural fit for Clone Commander Cody, boosting his Take Cover 1 to Take Cover 2 when equipped!
