Hello all! It’s Atomic Mass Games back again with our newest transmission, introducing our latest and greatest Key Operations: Jailbreak. For those of you that don’t recall, we introduced Key Operations at Ministrav for players that want a more thematic and narrative game mode for Shatterpoint. Key Operations are asymmetric missions that have Aggressors and Sentinels, that play out a narrative experience such as Triggering a Chain Reaction or Extracting an Agent. The third entry into these Key Operations focuses on what happens when an Operation goes wrong.
In Key Operations: Jailbreak, the Aggressor’s previous mission didn’t end well. The Sentinels forces caught Aggressor in the act and managed to capture and imprison one of their squads. For reasons either nefarious or noble, the remaining part of the Aggressor’s strike team has chosen to not leave their other squad to their fate and sets about infiltrating where they are held and breaking them free. The Sentinel, still wary of more interference from the Aggressor, posts vigilant guards on the Captured squad, Pressing for Information about any of the others and their plans. The Aggressor will have to slip in, mindful not to make too much Noise or rouse too much Suspicion, to release their team.
Jailbreak uses a new mechanic for Key Operations, Operation tokens. These new tokens have the same back and Icon on their faceup side, allowing for hidden information. They will be used in a variety of ways in forthcoming Key Operations. In this Key Operation, the Icons on the tokens represent how much Suspicion you roused with the Guards from the Noise you made. Each Noise you make, you put a facedown Operation token on Noise area, then those tokens are revealed at the end of the Sentinel’s turn to determine how much Suspicion the Sentinel has gained. Each token can gain the Sentinel anywhere between 0 and 2 Suspicion. This adds another layer of strategy to this Key Operation because the Aggressor must balance speed vs. stealth. Will the Aggressor gain some extra bonuses on their breakout attempt in exchange for some noise, position themselves in an advantageous but more likely to get heard position? Or will they keep quiet in the shadows, trading valuable time to keep Suspicion low and avoid the alarm. The new Operation tokens give us interesting tools to set up this kind of “press your luck” mechanics by allowing more control over the randomization and keeping the information a secret till the right time.
Will the Aggressor release their comrades and live to fight another day, or will the Sentinel catch the other squad in their desperate attempt and make a clean sweep of the Aggressor’s forces? Let your game decide when you play Key Operations: Jailbreak.
Now that we have talked about Jailbreak and these new Operation tokens, your first question is “When can I get my hands on these new toys?” Well, the answer to that question is right now! Find the updated Key Operations Rulebook as well as the new Key Operations: Jailbreak document in the dedicated Key Operations section on the Atomic Mass Games website.
In the Key Operations: Rulebook, you will find an update that explains how to use your Operation tokens, the Print and Play for Operation tokens, and Key Operations: Jailbreak. This will give all you need to play!
